Monday Message from Jerry Houston, President and CEO of HPISolutions
Today is President’s Day, an event originally established in 1885 in recognition of President George Washington’s Birthday. The holiday became properly known as President’s Day in 1971 under the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, an attempt to create more three-day weekends for the nation’s workers. While the holiday now represents the birthdays of George Washington and Abraham Lincoln, most recognize it as a day representing the recognition of all U.S. Presidents.
SO WHAT!
Why should we care why it is a holiday as long as we get the day off! It allows time for us Arizonans to go up north to Flagstaff to play in the snow. It allows those that stay in the valley of the sun to barbeque with our families. It allows all of us around the country to enjoy each other for an extra day without the pressures of business hanging over us…but is that the real story?
Take some time today to think about the Presidency, and, about our democracy. Some President’s have given their very lives during their time in office. Other’s faced monumental challenges such as the fight for independence, the civil war, the first and second world wars, depressions, recessions, and yes, pandemics. The Presidency is not an easy role, much like most leadership positions. Today is a great day to remember our leaders, past, present and future who made or will make the tough decisions, and burn the midnight oil as they toil on behalf of this nation. Happy Birthday to all our Presidents.
Enjoy your day off!
Jerry
