Getting Started… Why is it so Challenging?

Monday Message from Jerry Houston, President and CEO of HPISolutions

Have you ever wondered why it is so difficult to get started on your new objectives for 2021?

I am reminded, for some of us, that getting started is the most challenging part of getting it done.  If there was a National Association of Procrastinators, I would be in the Hall of Fame!  By the way, the Procrastinators Club of America was formed in 1946 by Les Waas and has about 6000 members (however it is likely that they seldom have agendas for meetings because they, well, procrastinate!)

A person I know well calls it “Bright Shiny” or in other words, I am accused (and stand guilty) of getting easily distracted.  So… how is it that I actually am capable of accomplishing a great deal in a given day, week, or month?  The truth is that I need structure; deadlines, reminders, and accountability partners.  I need to understand what we are trying to accomplish (mission) and how we are going to get there (smart goals).  This is accomplished in a number of different ways, including an Annual Retreat, planned follow-ups, weekly review of goal progress, and a leadership team that holds each other accountable for results.  In 2020, we reached and completed our top 6 objectives and had a very good revenue and profit result, even during the COVID pandemic.

I am not bragging, I just want to state that even procrastinators can get things done if they have a plan and are very engaged and passionate about what they are doing.  How about you?

Gotta go.  I have a meeting coming up in 45 minutes and I need to get ready!

Have a Great Week!

Jerry
