Readers, for our final quarter of the year, we are going to be writing on the theme, BUILDING A STRONG FOUNDATION. We all know that a house built on sand will soon fall and this certainly aligns with our businesses. We cannot survive or prosper and grow, unless the foundation of our businesses are rock solid. Founder and CEO, Jerry Houston, launches this series of Power Ideas on this whole of idea of Building a Strong Foundation. Enjoy this series.
Wikipedia states that the definition of the word “foundation” is:
1. The lowest load-bearing part of a building, typically below ground level.
2. An underlying basis or principle for something.
Webster tells us that it is the basis or groundwork of anything; for example, the moral foundation of society; the natural or prepared ground or base on which some structure rests.
OK, so how does that apply to our businesses?
First, let’s think about the components that make up a solid foundation for a company. Strong piers with which to rest the structure might include, financial strength, a solid business plan, having the right people in the right jobs at the right time, management being aligned on the vision, mission, values and objectives of the organization, a solid communication strategy with the employees of the organization, and the ability to be creative and innovative as a part of an enduring culture.
How do we know if we have achieved this strong foundation? What questions do we ask? How do we share this information with others? What is our customers’ perception of us?
Over the next few months our team of organizational and human development experts are going to share their ideas with you and we encourage you to engage and give us feedback about your thoughts on this critically important subject, especially if you are in a growth mode. Nothing challenges the base foundation like growth and success.
